SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team was narrowly edged out by Texas State, 1-0, in its Friday night match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals came out of the gate in the season opener aggressive, disengaging Texas State advances and answering back down the pitch for UIW shots on goal. Possession percentage was even keeled throughout the match, with UIW tallying 11 shots while the Bobcats had 13.
As the defense held off developing Texas State plays, goalkeeper
Cailey Croson tallied three clutch saves on the night.
It was only late in the first period, in the 38th minute, that a Texas State ball was tapped in from close range to allow a Bobcat goal. The period ended with Texas State leading, 1-0.
In the beginning of the second half, UIW seniors
Taylor Husfeld and
Brooke Hanson fired off two quick shots against the opponents' defensive line, but they were unable to break through. The Cardinals held the Bobcats shot-for-shot throughout the second half (five shots per team), but ultimately fell with a final match score of 1-0.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals travel down Interstate 10 to take on the University of Houston Cougars on Aug. 30. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. (CT) kickoff.
