SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 12-1, in a seven-inning, run-rule game on Friday night at Daniel Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
NOTABLES
- Sean Arnold extended his reached-base streak to 37 games. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a run and a home run.
- Ridge Rogers had a 3-for-4 outing including three RBI, two runs and two stolen bases.
- Andrew Morgan earned the win, striking out two batters in 4.0 innings pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals came out swinging in the bottom of the first. Arnold and
Antonio Valdez blasted back-to-back solo home runs to left field to open the inning before
Ryan Gonzalez scored on a
Ryan Flores single. Flores then stole home to give UIW an early 4-0 advantage.
Taylor Smith smacked a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to extend the Cardinals' lead to 7-0. A two-run single by Rogers, a RBI sacrifice fly by Arnold, and a Valdez RBI single in the bottom of the fifth gave UIW an 11-0 advantage. UIW extended its lead to 12-0 on a Rogers RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
The Golden Lions plated a run in the top of the seventh, but the Cardinals secured the 12-1 victory in seven innings.
