Men's basketball season ends in Abilene

ABILENE, Texas -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team lost an 81-52 season-ending game to Abilene Christian University on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
 
UIW finished 6-25 overall and 1-17 in Southland Conference play. ACU completed the regular season 25-6 and 14-4. The Wildcats enter next week's SLC Tournament as the No. 2 seed.
 
Notables
  • Charles Brown III closed his UIW career with 664 points.
  • Jorden Kite bucketed 340 points over his career.
  • The Cardinals, with a 3-4 performance at the free throw line, protected its NCAA Division I lead in free throw percentage. UIW finished the year hitting 448 of 549 shots from the charity stripe, good for an 81.0 percentage and the No. 1 standing among 351 D1 teams.
  • Augustine Ene scored 13 points and Brown 12 to lead the Cardinals.
  • Jaren Lewis of ACU was the game's high scorer with 19.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
  • UIW started Brown, Kite, Ene, Dwight Murray Jr. and Christian Peevy.
  • ACU opened with an 9-0 lead. Peevy's bucket at 17:05 interrupted the steak.
  • ACU achieved a 20-4 lead at 13:50, but UIW went on an 8-0 run cut the margin to 20-12 with a basket by Graham, a three pointer by Brown, and a bucket and a subsequent free throw by Brown at 10:41.
  • ACU then went on a 10-0 streak, which was stopped by Ene's three pointer at 6:14.
  • The Wildcats took a 20-point lead at 2:48.
  • The Cardinals, on the strength of Peevy's two free-throws and Caruso's shot-clock buzzer-beater, went on a 5-0 run to cut ACU's halftime margin to 15. ACU led, 42-27, at halftime.
  • Ene and Brown had eight points to lead the Cardinals. Peevy had six.
  • Hayden Farquhar had 14 and Jaylen Franklin 12 for the Wildcats. 
Second Half:
  • Murray stated the second half with a three pointer at 19:26.
  • ACU then scored 14 consecutive points to take a 56-30 lead.
  • Graham (with a three pointer), Murray and Smith then put UIW on a 7-0 streak to trim the ACU lead to 56-37.
  • ACU opened a 30-point lead, 71-41, at the 6:32 mark.
