SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team picked up where it left off from the 2018 season, securing its first conference victory of 2019 with a 7-0 routing of Nicholls on Sunday afternoon at the Mabry Tennis Center.
 
Prior to the match, the Cardinals celebrated Senior Day, honoring Paco Bendana, Caleb Dyer, Gabriel Evans, Sebastian Mortier, and Zachary Vander Heiden.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIW quickly took control of the match by securing the doubles point. Bendana and Dyer captured a 6-2 victory in the No. 2 spot, while Dennis Boisseau and Oliver Valentinsson won, 6-4, on court three to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
 
In singles, UIW secured victories on all six courts to complete the shutout. In the No. 3 spot, Bendana defeated Dylan Loru, 6-4, 6-4, while Mortier topped Oleksandr Podgursky, 6-3, 6-4, on court one.
 
Court four saw Valentinsson earn a 6-4, 6-3 win over Nestor Giribet Lopez before Evans beat Tobias Lentz, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, in the No. 2 spot. Dyer secured a three-set win (6-4, 3-6, 10-7) over Moritz Borges on court five before Boisseau clinched the shutout with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Alvaro Barranco on court six.
 
UP NEXT
UIW heads to New Orleans to take on the UNO Privateers on April 4. The dual is set for a 2 p.m. (CT) first serve.
