Cardinals face midweek tests against UT-Arlington, UTSA

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team takes a quick break from conference play to take on UT-Arlington at home Tuesday and UTSA on the road Wednesday.

THE OPENING PITCH
The Cardinals are coming off an 0-3 series loss against McNeese State this weekend and are looking to regain their form against a pair of winning teams in UTA (13-10) at 4 p.m. Tuesday and UTSA (12-11) Wednesday at 6 p.m..

SOBOLEWSKI'S STREAK
  • Senior first baseman Hope Sobolewski went 2-3 in her last game at McNeese, her third multi-hit game in the last five outings.
  • She now leads the team with a .261 batting average, six RBIs and a .435 slugging percentage. Over the last two weeks, she's batting .428.
  • She is hitting .667 (6-9) at home this season with four RBIs, including a walkoff two-RBI single to win the second game of last week's doubleheader against TSU.
  • Her four hits in the win were a career high.
MAKING THEM EARN IT
  • Brett Coleman pitched her eighth complete game of the season against McNeese State on Sunday, tossing six innings and surrendering no earned runs on a season-low two hits with three strikeouts.
  • The sophomore now leads the team in innings pitched (57.2) and strikeouts (34).
  • She's held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in five out of the last seven contests.
HOFFMAN EMERGES VICTORIOUS
  • In Wednesday's matchup against TSU, freshman pitcher Renee Hoffman threw a complete game, pitching a total of eight innings and surrendering just three earned runs on eight hits, picking up the first win of her college career.
  • Hoffman struck out six batters in the outing, tying her season high. She now leads the team in opposing batting average (.282).
  • In the same game, the freshman also produced at the plate. She finished 1-4 with a run scored, helping her own cause as she lifted the Cardinals to victory.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
The Mavericks are coming off a series sweep of South Alabama in the opening weekend of Sun Belt action. Whitney Walton leads the team with a .486 batting average, driving in 10 RBIs and working 17 walks on the season. In the circle, UTA relies on Randi Phillips, who's 6-5 with a 2.87 ERA and 27 strikeouts.

The Roadrunners also are fresh off a series sweep over Conference-USA rivals UAB. Bailey Baldwin has been a force at the plate, hitting .307 with five home runs, four triples and 18 RBIs. Madison Nelson is 6-5 in the circle with a 2.30 ERA to pace the Roadrunners.
