Upset Bid for Softball Falls Short at Baylor

WACO, TX – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team's upset bid against Baylor University of the Big 12 fell just short on Tuesday night as the Cardinals suffered an 11-9 defeat inside Getterman Stadium.

Incarnate Word falls to 22-14 overall, while Baylor moves its record to 22-12 after scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth for a come-from-behind victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Incarnate Word jumped on the scoreboard first with two runs in the opening inning of play as junior Jaisy Caceres laced an RBI triple to center field and later scored on a Baylor throwing error.
  • The Bears responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the second to build a 5-2 lead.
  • In the fourth inning, junior Sydney Zenon drew a bases-loaded walk with two out to score a run for Incarnate Word before fellow junior Bryanna Fuentes cleared the bases with an RBI double to center that put UIW ahead 6-5.
  • Caceres added another RBI to her total in the fourth as Incarnate Word built a 7-5 advantage.
  • Senior Madison Dorrow led off the fifth inning with a solo blast, and Zenon had an RBI single as the Cardinals' advantage grew to 9-5.
  • Baylor answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit back to two runs before plating four runs on just two hits and two UIW errors in the sixth to regain the lead.
  • Incarnate Word put a runner on with two out in the top of the seventh inning, but any hopes of a rally ended with a pop up to the infield.
NOTES
  • Fuentes finished the game 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, and three RBI, while Dorrow and sophomore Kennedy Hill were each 2-for-4 as well. Hill tallied a double in the contest, and Dorrow recorded a double and a home run.
  • Caceres and Zenon each had two RBI in the game for Incarnate Word.
