HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals and Notre Dame had a defensive battle on Friday that resulted in a 2-1 win for the Fighting Irish. The tables turned on Saturday, however, as the teams combined for 23 hits and 22 runs in a contest that saw UIW come out on top.
In the first inning, Smith hit a three-run blast -- his first as a Cardinal -- to left field to give UIW the lead.
Ryan Gonzalez then scored on a passed ball before Pettit singled to center field, driving in two to give the Cardinals a 6-0 lead.
In the top of the third, the Cardinals added another run when
Ryan Flores hit a solo home run to right center field, extending UIW's lead to 7-0. Notre Dame scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth, cutting UIW's edge to 7-1.
UIW added to its lead again in the fifth frame.
Sean Arnold singled to right center bring home in
Ridge Rogers, while Smith reached first on an error and Pettit scored on the throw as UIW took a 9-1 advantage.
The next inning,
Antonio Valdez scored on a double play, giving the Cardinals the 10-1 advantage. In the bottom of the sixth, Notre Dame notched three more runs to leave UIW with a 10-4 lead.
The Cardinals responded in the top of the seventh. Smith's hot hand continued as he blasted his second home run of the game, this time a two-RBI bomb that put UIW up 12-4.
In the eighth inning, the Irish tacked on three more runs to cut UIW's lead to 12-7, but UIW again had an answer for Notre Dame, scoring three more runs in the ninth frame to secure a 15-7 win.
