Cardinals can’t hold on against ACU

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell to Abilene Christian, 71-50, this afternoon at the McDermott Center.

The Cardinals managed to keep the game within reach until a fourth quarter run from the Wildcats turned the tide, leading the ACU's ninth conference victory of the season.

NOTABLES
  • Sophomore guard Liz Holter hit a career-high four three-pointers for a career-high 12 points in the loss.
  • Holter led the Cardinals offense with 12 points.
  • Junior forward Lunden Henry secured a career-high three assists to lead the team, along with junior guard Angelica Wiggins
  • Sophomore guard Kara Speer led the Cardinals on the glass, getting six boards. She added eight points and two assists in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
QTR 1 (13-14): UIW came out swinging, jumping out to an early 7-0 lead thanks to a three ball from senior guard Gabbi Bowie. The turnover bug got ahold of the Cardinals after the 7:30 mark and ACU took advantage, clawing back into the lead by the first quarter buzzer. Freshman forward Starr Omozee led the team with four points in the frame.

QTR 2 (24-29): The Cardinals brought the game back to even (19-19) after a layup from Bowie with 6:26 remaining in the half. But a 9-0 Wildcat run put UIW back in the hole. L. Henry scored five consecutive UIW points to cut into the deficit, but ACU led by five at the hallway point.

QTR 3 (35-43): UIW kept up the fight throughout the third thanks to the lights-out shooting of Holter. The sophomore entered the game with 6:34 left on the clock and promptly drained three triples over the course of 2:15. Unfortunately for UIW, Abilene was able to withstand the offensive explosion with its lead intact. They finished the quarter up eight.

QTR 4 (50-71): The Wildcats pressured the UIW defense early in the quarter, putting them in the bonus early on. ACU used those free throw opportunities to close the door on the game, widening their lead to 21 by the final buzzer.
