Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cardinals fall to Kansas State, 85-41

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell, 85-41, against Kansas State on Tuesday night in its final nonconference game on the road.

The Cardinals faced one of their toughest opponents to date in the Power 5 Wildcats. Kansas State played in the NCAA Tournament last season and, prior to the season, was projected as a 7-seed in this year's tournament by ESPN.

Brittney Stafford, who led the team with 13 points, got the ball rolling for the Cardinals in the first quarter. After the Wildcats jumped out to a 9-0 advantage, an early 3-pointer by Stafford set things in motion for the Red and Black, putting them nine points behind after the first quarter (20-11).

Kara Speer sunk a three to start the second quarter, but that was followed by an 8-0 Kansas State run. Victoria Jackson got in on the 3-point action as well, sinking one from beyond the arc before Stafford hit another difficult three from the baseline to help generate points for the Cardinals. Still, the Wildcats held the lead going into halftime (41-24).

After the break, the Wildcats protected the ball well, only turning it over once. Kansas State capitalized on points in the paint as it extended its lead in the third quarter, scoring 28 points and holding the Cardinals to just five.

In the final ten minutes, UIW held K-State to its lowest scoring quarter. Although they forced six turnovers in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals ultimately fell, 85-41.
