Clapp leads women’s volleyball to first conference win, tops New Orleans

SAN ANTONIO - The University of Incarnate Word volleyball team put together its best conference performance of the season on Thursday night against New Orleans as they beat the Privateers, 3-1.

NOTABLES

  • Bethany Clapp led UIW with a team-high 13 kills, 17 assists and four aces; Clapp played a complete game as she also had nine digs.
  • Allison Waits played a very strong game as she contributed 10 kills while recording a .500 attack percentage; she also had two block assists.
  • Defensively, the Cardinals were led by Alyssa Carlin, who finished with 15 digs.
  • UIW had 14 service aces compared to New Orleans' four.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (25-19)
| UIW had control of the set from start to finish. Once the Cardinals took a 7-6 lead after a kill from Clapp, they didn't look back the rest of the way. Clapp finished the set with a team-high four kills. The Cardinals played sound defense and forced the Privateers into mistakes to take a 15-10 lead. From there, Clapp took over with two aces and two kills to lead the team to the set win.

SET 2 (25-19) | Set two made back-to-back sets where UIW had complete control as they led by as much as nine points (22-13). The Cardinals were efficient in their attacks in this set as they posted a .323 attack percentage; Clapp led the charge with five kills and an outstanding .714 attack percentage. Presley Blaylock set up her teammates nicely as she led the team with six assists in the set.

SET 3 (22-25) | The Privateers were able to sneak the third set away from the Cards in a close battle. Julia Monday gave her best effort to try and end the match in three sets as she had two aces and two kills to go along with two digs. The team fell behind, 19-14, but showed their grit to tie it up at 22-22 before eventually dropping the set.

SET 4 (25-10) | Allison Waits wanted to make sure the Cardinals were home before the storms hit San Antonio, so she took over in the fourth set. Waits led the team with four kills in the deciding set. The team finished with a tremendous .550 attack percentage. Monday also contributed three kills in the dominating effort.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals close out their four-game homestand as they host Southeastern Louisiana for Alumni Weekend on Saturday. The match begins at 11 a.m. (CT) at the McDermott Center.
