HOUSTON -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team participated this weekend at the Rice Invitational in the penultimate competition of the fall season.
The event ran from Friday to Sunday and featured stiff competition from a variety of schools, including some conference rivals. The Cardinals picked up some good results as they look ahead to the ITA regionals and the upcoming season.
Friday:
The doubles team of Oliver Valentinsson and Luka Stojanovic picked up a 9-7 win in the B draw against Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The doubles format for this event is first to eight games, or two clear games, or a tiebreak at eight-all.
The doubles team of Dennis Boisseau and Marwin Kralemann picked up a win against Laredo 9-8 (5) in the B draw as well, sending two Cardinals teams to the semifinals of the B draw doubles.
In the singles, the Cardinals picked up one win on the first day with Boisseau beating a Texas A&M player 7-5, 6-3 in the B draw.
Saturday:
The duo of Boisseau and Kralemann picked up a semifinal win against Rice, winning 8-4 to send them to the final.
In the D draw, Warren Fulgenzi defeated a UT Arlington player after being up 5-4 in the first set and the player retired.
Kralemann picked up a singles win in the E draw 6-2, 6-3 against a Laredo player.
Sunday:
Valentinsson won his last match of the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over a Laredo player in the C draw.
Boisseau continued his good form, winning again in two sets 6-3, 7-6 against a Texas Tech player in the B draw.
Luke Godwin picked up a win on the last day of the tournament, going 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 against a Laredo player in the E draw.
The Cardinals look now to get ready for the ITA Regionals, which takes place in Waco, Texas, from Oct. 25 to Oct. 28.
