Omozee sets freshman record in loss to Lamar

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell victim to the rapid pace of Lamar, falling 77-51 Wednesday night at the McDermott Center.

Freshman forward Starr Omozee set a UIW Division I record for most doubles-doubles by a freshman when she recorded her fourth of the season (11 points and 10 rebounds) in the loss. This was her first double-double of conference play and breaks the previous record of three, set by junior guard Imani Robinson in the 2016-17 season.

NOTABLES
  • Omozee led the team with 11 points, her sixth double-digit point performance of the season and third in her last four outings.
  • The Plugerville product also led the team on the glass tonight, bringing in 10, including four offensive rebounds.
  • Senior guard Gabbi Bowie tied her career-high with four assists to lead the team. She turned in a quality stat line of seven points, five rebounds and four assists in 30:53 of play.
  • She finished 4-4 from the charity stripe, her first such game of the season.
  • Junior forward Lunden Henry became just the third Cardinal to record multiple blocks in a game, with two. She joins Omozee (at McNeese) and junior guard Angelica Wiggins (at San Diego State) who each had two blocks in their games as well.
  • Junior guard Imani Robinson finished with 10 points for her eighth 10+ points game of the season.
  • Freshman guard Macy Ray delivered two threes, giving her two consecutive games with multiple makes from beyond the arc. She finished with nine points, two assists and two rebounds.
  • All eight players that saw the court recorded two or more rebounds.
  • UIW went 16-22 (72.7 percent) from the free throw line tonight. The Cardinals have now made at least 70 percent of their free throws in three of their last four contests.
  • UIW matched its season-high tonight with five team blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
QTR 1 (15-20): Lamar started the game with a high-intensity full court press, resulting in a couple quick steals and a 7-3 lead. But UIW responded well, passing through the press on its way to a 10-2 run to take an early 13-9 lead. Timely threes from Ray and sophomore guard Kara Speer played a big role in UIW seizing early momentum. However, Lamar flexed its muscles in the final three and a half minutes, claiming a five point lead at the break. Six different UIW Cardinals scored points in the frame.

QTR 2 (28-42): The pressure of the Lamar defense caused issues for UIW in the second as Lamar scored 15 points off turnovers to widen the gap. UIW enjoyed an 8-0 run late to bring it within 12 (28-40). But, by the end of 20 minutes, Lamar led by 14. Five different UIW Cardinals recorded points in the quarter, led by Ray, Bowie and Robinson, who each hit a three.

QTR 3 (41-63): The pace quickened in the third quarter, allowing UIW to get to the line with regularity. By the end of the quarter, UIW had earned 12 foul shots, converting nine (75 percent). The free throws wouldn't be enough to keep up with the Lamar though. The visiting Cardinals finished the quarter with seven fast break points and an astounding 21 shot attempts in 10 minutes.

QTR 4 (51-77): Omozee led the way for UIW as they continued to fight for the final 10 minutes. By the end of the quarter, Omozee delivered four points and six rebounds to secure her fourth double-double of the season. Lamar finished off the game for its sixth conference victory of the season.

HEAR FROM COACH SMITH
"Lamar showed why they're one of the top teams in the conference tonight. Their defensive pressure is what they're known for and they were able to create a lot of points off our turnovers. We'll get back to work in practice. We'll try to correct some of the mistakes we made tonight and come out ready to play on Saturday."

UP NEXT
UIW closes out its home stand on Saturday when the Cardinals host the Privateers of New Orleans. Tip off for that contest is set for 12:15 p.m. at the McDermott Center.
