Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cardinals lose to Lamar in overtime thriller

BEAUMONT, Texas – Christian Peevy's jumper with 1.7 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime, and the University of the Incarnate Word's men's basketball team held Lamar to one basket from the field in the overtime period -- but LU used untimely UIW turnovers and 11 points from the foul line in overtime to defeat UIW, 87-81, in a Southland Conference game on Wednesday night at the Montagne Center.

The UIW Cardinals used clutch shooting and a smothering defense to overcome a 14-point Lamar lead in the second half, but it was LU's 11 for 12 free throw shooting performance in the overtime period that won the game. Lamar hit only 50 percent of its free throws in the second half, but burned the nets from the line at a 91.7 rate in the extra period.

The loss dropped UIW to 6-13 overall and 1-5 in conference. Lamar improved to 9-10 and 2-4.

COACH CUNNINGHAM SAID
" It's definitely tough to lose in overtime on the road. The fellas kept at it and willed themselves back in it, but we are still learning how to execute in tight games. It's difficult to go through these growing pains but I suppose that's why they're called pains. We're gonna keep battling."
