SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team opened Southland Conference play with a 2-1 win over Nicholls in its home contest Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIW started the game with strong offensive lines, displaying a cohesive unit and taking shots on goal. Taylor Husfeld came into the game in the 19th minute, and then contributed the first goal of the game in the 20th. The Cardinals entered the half up 1-0.
Strong offensive play continued in the second half, extending UIW's lead to 2-0 in the 46th minute when Jade Piper scored a one-on-one goal. Emily Halal remained aggressive with multiple stolen possessions to protect the Cardinal net.
A penalty kick opportunity for Nicholls led to their only goal of the match with 33 seconds left on the clock, ending the contest with a 2-1 win for UIW.

UIW plays at home again Sunday morning when it faces Southeastern Louisiana. Game time is set for 11 a.m. (CT) at Benson Stadium.
