SAN ANTONIO – Behind a game-tying home run by
Delaney Guzman and the go-ahead blast by
Bailey Thomas, the University of the Incarnate Word softball team overcame an early 3-1 hole to defeat host UTSA, 4-3, Tuesday evening from Roadrunners Field.
The victory gave the Cardinals a season sweep of the Roadrunners, as UIW won by the same score at Cardinals Field earlier in the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIW (19-28) scored the game's first run on
Nina Flores' RBI single in the top of the first, but UTSA (14-30) answered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame, as UIW had a pair of errors in the inning.
The score remained that way until the Cardinals put a three-spot of their own in the top of the fourth. After Flores hit a one-out single, Guzman cleared the bases and tied the game with a two-run homer to left field. Two batters later, Thomas untied the game with a solo shot to left-center.
Flores and
Marcela Lopez each had two hits to lead the Cardinals' offense.
Jessica Rodriguez (1-4) was stellar in relief, as she gave up only one hit and a walk while striking out two in 6.1 innings.
Bailee Baldwin registered a two-hit game to lead UTSA. Lizzy Fox (12-12), UIW assistant coach
Rachel Fox's sister, took the loss, as she allowed seven hits, four runs, and three walks while striking out five in the complete-game effort.
