UIW Baseball Earns 5-2 Victory Over Saint Louis

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team picked up a 5-2 victory over Saint Louis on Saturday, behind strong pitching a handful of timely at bats.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Cardinals (4-3) secured an early 3-0 lead in their third game at the Alamo Irish Classic. Kyle Bergeron led off with a single to left field, before Sean Arnold was hit by a pitch. Ridge Rogers drove Bergeron in with a single through the right side, before a Shea Gutierrez single to right field scored Genenbacher. A few pitches later, Mark Whitehead notched a sac fly to center, allowing Arnold to come home.

UIW added a run in the fifth, when Bergeron doubled down the left field line to score Eddy Gonzalez.

The Cardinals took a 5-0 advantage in the seventh, after David Anaya drove in Whitehead with a sac fly to center.

The Billikens (1-6) made things interesting with a pair of runs in the ninth, but UIW held on for the win.

LEADERS

Bergeron paced the Cardinals with a 2-for-3 night, 1 run and 1 RBI. Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a run, while Rodgers and Gutierrez each hit 1-for-4 with an RBI. Whitehead contributed a run and an RBI, while Anaya drove in one.

Aaron Case had the only RBI for Saint Louis, and finished 1-for-5.

Tyler Miller (1-0) picked up the victory, tossing 6.0 scoreless innings, with 9 strikeouts and no walks. In relief, Michael McElmeel and Cody Allen combined to allow 2 runs on 3 hits, with 3 strikeouts through 3.0 innings of work.

Cody Luther (0-1) took the loss, surrendering 3 runs on 2 hits, with 1 strikeout through 1.0 innings on the mound.

WHO'S IN?

UIW, Notre Dame and Purdue each finished with a 2-1 record through three games of the Alamo Irish Classic. To decide the championship matchup, the first tiebreaker is runs allowed against the three teams involved in the tie. The Fighting Irish surrendered seven runs, while the Boilermakers and Cardinals each gave up eight. Therefore, Notre Dame advances to the championship game, while Purdue and UIW remain tied. The next tiebreaker is head-to-head matchups. Because the Boilermakers defeated the Cardinals, 5-4, Purdue will advance to meet the Fighting Irish on Sunday, while UIW will host Saint Louis at Daniel Sullivan Field.
