Lamar Flies Past UIW Women’s Hoops on Valentine’s Day

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A disastrous third quarter doomed the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team on Wednesday night as Lamar earned a 71-47 victory at the McDermott Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
UIW (3-21, 2-11 SLC) kept things close for the majority of the first quarter and trailed by just six points at halftime.
 
Things fell apart for the home Cardinals in the third quarter as LU (18-6, 13-1 SLC) opened the period on a 19-0 run and secured a 27-point lead after 30 minutes of action.
 
UIW outscored LU in the fourth quarter, but the home team was unable to climb back into the contest as the visiting Cardinals won their 10th straight.
 
THE BREAKDOWN
 
UIW shot 29.1 percent from the floor, 26.1 percent from three-point range and 52.9 percent at the free throw line. LU shot 23.1 percent from beyond the arc and 60.0 percent at the charity stripe, but made 48.4 percent of its shots from the field.
 
LU won the battle of the boards, 42-36, while amassing an incredible 48-12 edge on points in the paint. The visiting team also dominated second chance points, 17-3, while earning an 8-0 advantage on fast break points. LU forced 28 turnovers, while recording 17 steals, and converted UIW's miscues into a 29-12 edge on points off turnovers.
 
LEADERS
 
Imani Robinson and Olivia Noah led UIW with 13 and 11 points respectively. Quincy Baker pulled down a team-high 9 rebounds, while Liz Holter added 3 assists.
 
Four LU players scored in double-figures, paced by DeA'ngela Mathis, who finished with 19 points, 7 boards, 3 assists, 1 block and 1 steal.
 
NOTEABLES
 
Though little consolation for the home Cardinals, UIW held its opponent's leading scorer under their season average for the 12th time in 13 Southland Conference games.
