Cardinals fall to No. 14 Minnesota on the road

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team battled hard, but No. 14 Minnesota proved too strong and the Cardinals ultimately fell,75-39, Wednesday afternoon at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.

NOTABLES
  • Junior guard Angelica Wiggins led the team with 13 points.
  • She made three three-pointers. She has now made multiple threes in five of her last seven games.
  • Freshman forward Starr Omozee pulled down a team-best six rebounds to go along with nine points in 18 minutes of play.
  • She has now recorded at least five points and five rebounds in five games this season.
  • As a team, UIW out-rebounded Minnesota, 18-9, on the offensive glass. The Cardinals were led by sophomore forward Olivia Noah, who had three offensive boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
QTR 1 (4-15): UIW began the game with an emphasis on defense, holding the Gophers to just 35.3 percent shooting in the opening frame. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were unable to match those successes on the offensive side of the floor, and they trailed Minnesota by 11 heading into the second quarter. Wiggins led the team with three points, extending her streak to seven consecutive games with a made three-pointer.

QTR 2 (11-32): The Cardinals continued to battle on defense, holding the Gophers scoreless for a stretch of 3:18 in the quarter. But, once again, the length and athleticism of Minnesota proved too difficult and the Gophers grew their lead. Wiggins led the team in scoring after hitting her second three of the game. UIW out-rebounded Minnesota on the offensive glass, 7-5, in the opening 20 minutes.

QTR 3 (28-64): The Cardinals came out of the locker room with renewed vigor on offense, scoring 17 points in the quarter, including the first four points of the frame. The Gophers found their stroke as well, however, and grew their lead heading into the fourth quarter. Wiggins led the team with seven points in the quarter.

QTR 4 (39-75): UIW fought until the end, scoring the final seven points of the game, including a three pointer from freshman guard Macy Ray, but Minnesota held fast to improve to 8-0 on the season. Omozee led the team with five points in the quarter, including a three of her own.
