UIW falls to South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team concluded a grueling six-day road trip to start the season, falling to South Dakota, 96-43, Sunday afternoon in Vermillion, South Dakota.
 
NOTABLES
  • Junior forward Lunden Henry led the team with 11 points.
  • It was her second consecutive game scoring in double figures -- also scored 10 pts at GCU (Nov. 9)
  • Freshman forward Starr Omozee led the team in rebounds for the second straight game, pulling down five.
  • Freshman guard Macy Ray delivered nine points off the bench while connecting on two three pointers. She led the team in shooting, going three for five from the field, two of four from deep.
  • Junior guard Angelica Wiggins also delivered two shots from distance. She finished with seven points on .500 percent shooting for deep (two of four).
HOW IT HAPPENED
QTR 1 (7-24): The Cardinals held pace early, trailing 6-9 at the 5:03 mark. But USD went on a run to close out the quarter, resulting in a 17-point lead. Junior guard Imani Robinson led the team with four points.

QTR 2 (20-56): Wiggins found her stroke on the outside early in the second, drilling both of her three-point attempts in the quarter for UIW. The USD offense stayed hot, however, extending its lead into the break. Wiggins led the team with seven points in the frame. Bowie banked home a buzzer-beating three at the end, her first bucket of the afternoon. 

QTR 3 (28-82): USD continued its strong play into the second half. Omozee led the team with four points in the period.

QTR 4 (43-96): The Cardinals continued to battle through the fourth, outscoring the Coyotes, 15-14, through the final quarter. Ray and L. Henry paced the offense, each posting six points.
 
UP NEXT
The Cardinals return to the friendly confines of the McDermott Center to open the home schedule against Houston next Friday at 11:30 a.m. (CT). It will be Elementary Day at the game. Local elementary schools have been invited to attend during the school day.
