HOUSTON, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team concludes its second Southland Conference road trip of the season, facing Houston Baptist on Saturday at Sharp Gym, in Houston. First serve is set for 1 p.m. CT. This is UIW's fifth road match in conference play and the 12th match overall away from the McDermott Center.

LAST TIME OUT
- UIW fell in four sets at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in its last match, Thursday evening.
- Freshman outside hitter Bethany Clapp led the team with 16 kills on a team-high .361 hitting, her best attacking percentage in an SLC match this season.
- She also led the team with three aces and nine digs.
- Freshman setter Pilar Gonzaba contributed 33 assists, her third straight match with 30-or-more assists.
- Freshman middle blocker Carissa McGarity led the team with four blocks. She contributed offensively by adding seven kills on .333 hitting.
- Sophomore libero Madelynn Miller also had nine digs to lead the team, along with Clapp.
- Senior outside hitter Autumn Lockley delivered 10 kills, marking her third straight contest with double-digit kills, and her sixth such match of 2018.
CERTIFIED FRESH
- The Cardinal freshmen have asserted themselves as one of the top all-around freshman classes in the conference.
- Clapp has established herself as a premier offensive weapon on the outside. She leads the team with 181 kills, including 88 kills in six SLC matches. Her 3.29 kills per set is the best among freshman in the conference, and sixth best overall.
- She posted an .824 hitting percentage in UIW's victory over Alcorn State (9/15), the best attacking percentage for a single match in the conference (minimum of 12 kills)
- Clapp has now posted double-digit kills in each of her last eight matches, marking the longest such streak since Lockley posted 12 consecutive double-digit kill performances in 2016.
- McGarity sits among the top freshmen in the SLC with 0.95 blocks per set played. She also leads the team with 54.0 blocks this year.
- Gonzaba has eclipsed the 300 assist plateau this season; her current total is 346. She has delivered 129 assists in her last two matches (10.75 assists per set).
- Her 42-assist performance in UIW's 3-0 win over SHSU (Sept. 27) stands as the most assists by anyone in the SLC over the course of a 3-set match.
- On the season, Gonzaba sits second best among freshmen in the conference, and sixth best overall, with 7.52 assists per set.
CARDINALS IN CONFERENCE
- UIW has a 2-4 SLC record.
- Clapp leads the conference in total kills (88), 20 kills above the next closest competitor.
- She is also the top freshman in the conference, and fourth best overall, in kills per set (3.67).
- The Corpus Christi native holds two double-doubles in conference play (@ SLU, Sept. 22 and vs ACU, Sept. 29).
- Miller leads the SLC with 104 digs. She ranks fourth in the conference in digs per set, averaging 4.33.
- Gonzaba owns 187 assists in conference play, the second most in the conference.
- She averages 9.35 assists per set in conference play, which is sixth most in the conference and the best among qualifying freshman setters.
- McGarity is third in the conference with 25 blocks, just five back from first place.
- She averages 1.04 blocks per set in SLC matches. This is the second best average among SLC freshman and the ninth best in the conference.
- Lockley recorded 26 kills against ACU on Sept. 29. That stands as the most kills in a single match of any SLC student-athlete in 2018.
SCOUTING HOUSTON BAPTIST
- The Huskies enter Saturday's match with an 8-10 overall record. They are 1-3 in SLC play.
- They enter play after losing each of their two previous matches on the road last week, 3-1 at SFA (Sept. 27) and 3-0 at UCA (Sept. 29).
- HBU is led by sophomore Mikayla Vivens. She leads the conference with 13 double-doubles and averages 3.4 kills and 3.34 digs per set in 2018.
- UIW leads the all-time series with HBU, 15-13. The Cardinals won the last match, 3-2 (Oct. 28, 2017).
UP NEXT
The Cardinals host two matches next week, starting against SFA (Oct. 11, 7 p.m. CT) followed by a match with UCA (Oct. 13, noon CT) at the McDermott Center.
