HUNTSVILLE -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team secured a 3-0, shutout road win at Sam Houston State on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals set the tone in the first period with an early goal from
Sabrina Martineau, assisted by
Sam Batley, in the 16th minute. UIW had 16 shots on the game with seven on goal. The Cardinals took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
SHSU brought more intensity in the second period with additional shots, but Cardinals goalkeeper
Sydney Huntsinger excelled and denied Bearkat opportunities. Sam Houston had 22 shots in the game, and Huntsinger attributed 11 saves.
UIW kept their strategy steady in the second half, extending their lead in the 63rd minute.
Sam Batley took advantage of a crossbar rebound and found the open net from one yard out, with an assist from
Isabella Beletic, to secure a Cardinal goal. Another scoring opportunity in the 69th minute occurred when
Sabrina Martineau captured the ball in the air and flicked it over the Bearkat keeper's head from 25 yards out, solidifying the Cardinal shutout and a 3-0 win.
