UIW drops three-set match to UCA

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team suffered a tough, 3-0, loss to Central Arkansas on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center.

  • She matched her career high with five kills, originally set vs Prairie View A&M (9/28/16).
  • Sophomore outside hitter Julia Monday led the team in kills for the second consecutive match. She finished with eight.
  • Sophomore libero Madelynn Miller finished with 10 digs, marking her third consecutive match with double-digit digs.
  • Senior middle blocker Maddie Slaughter led the team with three blocks, including one solo block. She also contributed four kills.
  • Freshman setter Pilar Gonzaba finished with 15 assists, while fellow freshman setter Kendall Kilchrist put up 10.
  • Gonzaba now owns 395 assists this season, seven away from tying the UIW DI record for most assists by a freshman in a single season -- held by Madison Williams (402) set in the 2014 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (7-25) | The UCA offense came out hot, playing nearly mistake free volleyball in the opening set. UIW couldn't keep up and dropped the set.

SET 2 (18-25) | The second set began much like the first, with UCA jumping out to a 17-9 lead. The Cardinals changed their look, going with a 6-2 rotation, and the team responded. UIW won five of the last seven points in the set, but the rally fell short. Monday led the team with four kills, while Gonzaba (six) and Kilchrist (five) combined for 11 assists.

SET 3 (19-25) | The Cardinals ratcheted up the intensity to start the third set, keeping the score close through much of the early going. UIW forced four lead changes early, but with the score tied at 16, UCA pulled away, winning the set by six points. Waits led the team with three kills, five total Cardinals registered multiple kills.

HEAR FROM COACH DABBS
"I made some changes in the second set; we went from the 5-1 to a 6-2 to give us a bigger front line. I think Waits came in and did a great job offensively for us. She probably hit her best today. Taylor came in as well and had some nice blocks. We have to keep getting better and being challenged is always fun!"

UP NEXT
The Cardinals head back out on the road for a one-game jaunt into Louisiana. UIW faces McNeese on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. (CT). The Cardinals then have a nine-day break before traveling to Nicholls for a Thursday night tilt on Oct. 25. First serve for that contest is set for 6:30 p.m.
