SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Freshman
JP Nava scored in the 100th minute to give The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team a 3-3 overtime tie against San Jacinto in preseason action Sunday night from Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
San Jac drew first blood on a Cardinal own goal in the fifth minute. The Cardinals regrouped and scored two unanswered in a three-minute span to take a 2-1 lead.
Roberto Diaz Fernandez knotted the game at one apiece in the 16th minute, assisted by
Fernando Laverde. Three minutes later,
Robert Pratt sent a beautiful up-field pass to
Darius Feldman, who found the back of the net.
San Jac would not go away, however, as Ryan Medilah and Francois Haba scored to give the Coyotes a 3-2 lead. Haba's tally came from a long up-field pass by Carlos Ibarra, resulting in a breakaway goal in the 90th minute.
Prior to the start of the game, the teams agreed to play a 20-minute overtime session. Midway through the extra period, the Cardinals earned a corner kick. Newcomer
Johnathon Diaz took the corner and sent a beautiful volley in the box, which was headed home by Nava to tie the game at 3-all.
UIW outshot San Jac, 19-8, and doubled up the Coyotes, 6-3, in corners.
LEADERS
The match featured six different goal scorers. In goal,
Joshua Blair started for the Cardinals and Luis Rodriguez for San Jac. Blair made two saves and allowed a goal in 45 minutes, while Rodriguez allowed three goals and made a pair of saves in 65 minutes.
Jorge Guzman played the second half against Bryan Cortez for San Jac. Cortez stopped a couple of shots. In overtime, newcomer
Brendan Brown suited up for the Cardinals and earned the tie, as he made one save.

The Cardinals play one final exhibition game at Trinity on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 5:30 p.m.
