New Orleans Takes Game two 9-2

SAN ANTONIO– A five-run fourth inning propelled the University of New Orleans to a 9-2 victory over the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team in game two of the Southland Conference series on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After being outscored 15-7 in game one, the Cardinals (17-27, 5-15 SLC) jumped out ahead in the third inning when Sear Arnold doubled in Bryce Shepherd for an early 1-0 lead. New Orleans (21-21, 10-10 SLC) didn't waste much time and answered right back in the next half inning with five of their own. All five runs came on run scoring singles.

UIW's best chance came in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases with nobody out and the score 5-1. The Privateers' Bryan Warzek managed to escape the jam without allowing a run. He induced ground out, and struck out the next two batters.

In the seventh inning, Shepherd hit a depp fly ball to left field that had a chance to clear the fence, but Jay Robinson made a leaping effort to keep the ball in the park for a double. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Mark Whitehead drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center field to cut the lead down to 5-2. Later in the inning with runners on first and third and one out, the Cardinals hit into a double play to end the threat.

New Orelans added two more in the eight with a two-run homerun by Dakota Dean, and two more in the ninth inning with a two-RBI single by Samuel Capielano.

For New Orleans, Warzek picked up the win to move to 6-2 , while Bernie Martinez got tabbed with the loss to fall to 3-4. Reeves Martin tossed three strong innings to collect his third save of the season.

LEADERS

Whitehead and Lee Thomas both looked good at the plate, despite both being lefties and facing a tough lefthander on the mound. Whitehead also added an RBI, a triple, a sac bunt and a stolen base. Shepherd went 2-for-4, with two runs scored, and Arnold hit two doubles and scored a run.

For New Orleans, Capielano had three hits, two RBI and two runs, while three other Privateers collected two RBI.
