SAN ANTONIO, TX – It was a battle of the Cardinals on Friday afternoon as the University of the Incarnate Word softball team hosted Lamar in a double header at Cardinals Field on Battle of the Flowers Day in San Antonio.
In the opening game of the day, it was a tight contest after three innings with Lamar leading 5-3 after a four run second inning. However, in the sixth inning, Lamar put 15 runs on the board as they could not be stopped at the plate. Brittany Rodriguez went 3-3 in the inning alone with three RBI and the team hit three homeruns in the outburst.
The Bright spot for UIW (9-38, 4-19 SLC) came when Senior
Christy Trevino hit her seventh homerun of her collegiate career, but the first one this season. Trevino led the team with two RBI and one walk. The final came out to 22-4 in favor of Lamar.
Sarah Leal got the start and she went 4.0 innings and finished with a line of 11 runs, seven earned, on nine hits and five walks. Ciara Luna got the win after going 5.0 innings allowing just three earned runs on seven hits.
Ashley McDowell and Rodriguez led Lamar with a combined 11 RBI and seven hits.
Danielle Ramirez and
Alex Alonzo each had two hits for UIW.
Joanna Valencia got the start in game two and she kept UIW in the ballgame with a complete game performance. Lamar jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four and a half innings, but UIW stormed back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth with RBI from Ramirez, Alonzo, and
Mikaela Flores.
Lamar added one run in the sixth and seventh to take an 8-4 win in game two. Valencia allowed eight runs, five earned, while giving up eight hits. Laura Napoli gets her 10
th win of the season after giving up four earned runs in 4.0 innings of work. Ramirez and Flores led UIW at the plate with three hits each and Brynn Baca and Shelby Henderson each had three RBI for Lamar.
The series concludes tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. as UIW will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday at Cardinals Field.
