UIW Defeats SFA in Extras, 3-2

Christy Trevino goes 2-for-4, scores winning run

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Christy Trevino scored on a Stephen F. Austin throwing error in the top of the eighth as the UIW softball team defeated the Ladyjacks, 3-2, in eight innings to salvage a three-game sweep by SFA Saturday afternoon from SFA Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SFA (17-27 overall, 9-9 SLC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Madison Clements.

UIW (9-36, 4-16) tied the game in the top of the third on Trevino's RBI single down the right field line that scored Delaney Guzman.

The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth as Victoria Bratcher's RBI double allowed Kellen Robles to cross the plate. But the Ladyjacks tied the game in the bottom half of the frame with a home run by Kiriany Hornberger.

UIW was aggressive in the top of the eighth as the first four batters reached base safely. Trevino started the frame with a single through the right side. She advanced to second on Mikayla Flores' single up the middle, then crossed home on a Ladyjack throwing error. Lacie Stevens followed with an infield single to load the bases full of Cardinals and nobody out. But the Cardinals could not get any more runs across, as SFA got two strikeouts and a ground out to end the inning. SFA went down in order in the bottom of the eighth to end the game.

LEADERS

Trevino went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead UIW. Guzman and Bratcher also registered two hit-games. Joanna Valencia went the distance in the circle to improve to 5-7 on the season, as she allowed seven hits, one earned run, and one walk with three strikeouts.

Brittany Lewis went 2-for-4 to lead SFA. Makayla Sikes took the loss in relief, as she gave up four hits and one run with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings.
