Spiders End Cardinals' 4-game Winning Streak

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball once again came back all the way from being down 5-0, but Richmond scored two in the top of the ninth for the 7-5 victory, on Wednesday at Sullivan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Spiders (4-8) got on the board right off the get-go, when they scored a run in the top of the first. Then in the fourth, they added four more runs thanks to a pair of doubles and a triple.

Down 5-0 in the fifth, the Cardinals battled back and scored four runs to make it interesting. Kyler Genenbacher singled in a run, David Anaya drove in two, and Lee Thomas plated one on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4. Then in the seventh, Bryce Shepherd tied the game 5-5 with an RBI single through the left side.

After both teams went scoreless in the eighth, the Spiders got to the UIW pitching in the ninth, scoring two runs to take a 7-5 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Cardinals went 1-2-3 to end the game.

Daniel Brumbaugh picked up the win for the Spiders with two scoreless innings in relief, and Tyler Miller gets credited with the loss. Nolan Ellis, Cody Allen, and Jesse Borden all threw a scoreless inning in relief for UIW.

LEADERS

Five Cardinals ended up with two hits. Eddy Gonzalez, Genenbacher, Thomas, Shepherd and Sean Arnold led the way. Anaya had a hit and two RBI, while Mark Whitehead was 1-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 11.

For the Spiders, Vinny Capra, Jonathan De Marte and Justin Cook all had two hits each, while Brumbaugh drove in two runs.

The Cardinals outhit Richmond 13-11, but committed two errors which led to one unearned run.
