CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – UIW's
Sam Burmeister scored a season-high 21 points, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi held the Cardinals' top scorer,
Jalin Hart, to just two points and the Islanders outscored UIW, 46-18, in points in the paint in their 81-64 win over UIW Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Simi Socks started the game hitting a three-pointer for UIW (12-17 overall, 7-11 SLC), but TAMUCC (19-10, 12-6) scored the next 12 points for an early 12-3 lead. UIW answered with a 12-4 run to take a 15-14 lead, culminated by a three-pointer by
Shawn Johnson.
The Islanders answered with another big run, 15-2, to take a 12-point lead. UIW came as close as four, but the Islanders took an eight-point lead at the break, 39-31, as Cole Martinez swished a trey at the buzzer.
TAMUCC opened the second half scoring the first 11 points, opening up a 50-31 lead, and the Cardinals could not recover. The Islanders outscored UIW 42-33 in the half.
LEADERS
Burmeister finished 6-for-13 from the floor, 3-for-7 from beyond the arc, and 6-for-8 from the charity stripe. He also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds. He scored a career-high 22 points at Northwood (Texas) on Nov. 9, 2013.
Jorden Kite came off the bench to score 11 points, while
Shawn Johnson added 10.
The conference's leading scorer, Rashawn Thomas, scored 30 points to lead TAMUCC.
