SAN ANTONIO, TX – It took nine innings, but the University of the Incarnate Word softball team was able to defeat the UTSA Roadrunners to open the UTSA Classic this weekend. After allowing USTA to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Cardinals were able to win the game 5-4 after a sacrifice fly from
Mikaela Flores.
CARDINALS DEFEAT UTSA IN OPENER
Bridget Stein got the start for UIW (4-7, 0-0) and she only allowed two earned runs in 4.2 innings of work. The Cardinals jumped on the board in the top of the second inning when
Alex Alonzo hit a solo blast to center field for her first homerun of the season.
After the Roadrunners tied the game in the bottom of the third, the Cardinals erupted for three runs in the top of the fifth highlighted by an RBI single from
Christy Trevino to give UIW a 4-1 advantage. USTA would not go down easy as the Roadrunners scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4 and take the game to extra innings.
In the top of the ninth, the Cardinals were able to take a 5-4 lead and Sarah Leah was able to shutdown UTSA in the bottom of the inning to give the Cardinals the victory. Both Stein and Leal pitched well for UIW and Alonzo led the team at the plate with the homerun. Flores, Trevino, and Hebert also had an RBI to lead the offense.
Rylee Rodriguez led the Roadrunners with two hits and two RBI at the plate. Lizzy Fox is charged with the loss after going 4.1 innings while allowing four hits and one run.

The Cardinals resume the UTSA Classic tomorrow at 10 a.m. when they take on New Mexico followed by a matchup against Texas State at 12:30 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
