HOUSTON, TX – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team dropped a pair of games during the second day of the Houston Classic on Saturday afternoon. In the first game of the day against Rhode Island, the Cardinals were defeated 7-5, and they could not overcome Ole Miss 11-1 in five innings.
CARDINALS FALL TO RHODE ISLAND
Against Rhode Island, UIW jumped on the board in the first inning after
Alex Alonzo singled through the left side to give the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. Rhode Island responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning and they did not look back.
Rhode Island scored three runs in the second inning and one in the third to take a 7-1 advantage. The Cardinals battled back with a three run homer in the fifth by
Mikaela Flores in the fifth to close the gap and
Lacie Stevens doubled down the left field line to score Alonzo. However, Rhode Island would go on to win the game 7-5.
Joanna Valencia got the start in the pitching circle and she struggled going 1.1 innings allowing four earned runs on four hits. At the plate, the Cardinals totaled 10 hits as a team and
Marcela Lopez continued her hot streak at the plate going 3-4 with two runs scored. Flores also had a good game with two hits and three RBI. Stevens and Alonso each had an RBI
Becca Rogers got the victory for Rhode Island after going 5.0 innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits. Erika Yeager led the team at the plate with two hits and three RBI.
OLE MISS SCORES EIGHT IN THE FOURTH TO DEFEAT UIW
In the second game of the doubleheader, UIW could only produce three hits at the plate against the Rebels.
Sarah Leal started for the Cardinals and she allowed seven earned runs in 3.1 innings. Ole Miss scored three runs in the third and eight in the fourth.
Kaitlin Lee picked up the victory for Ole Miss after going 3.0 innings and allowing just one hit. Briana Nevarez led UIW at the plate with a hit and the team's only RBI.
