HOUSTON, TX – After waiting out the rain for much of the day, the University of the Incarnate Word softball team has completed the first day of the Houston Classic. The Cardinals (3-4, 0-0) were defeated 14-0 by #4 Oklahoma, but the team bounced back with a 3-2 victory over Rhode Island at Cougar Field.
CARDINALS NEARLY NO HIT BY THE SOONERS
In the first game of the Houston Classic, UIW had a tough task in facing the #4 ranked Oklahoma Sooners at Cougar Field.
Sarah Leal started in the pitching circle for the Cardinals and she did not make it out of the first inning after allowing 11 runs, four earned, on eight hits in the first.
The Cardinals struggled at the plate, however, in the top of the fourth inning,
Marcela Lopez broke up the Sooners no-hitter with an infield single which accounted for the only hit of the contest for UIW.
Oklahoma added one run in the second and two more in the third to complete the scoring. UIW went 1-16 at the dish with two walks and four strikeouts. The Sooners ended the game with 14 hits and 12 RBI. Nicole Pendley led the team at the plate going 3-4 with five RBI and three runs scored. Fale Aviu added three RBI and Nicole Mendes picked up the win after going 1.2 innings and striking out four.
UIW GETS BACK ON TRACK IN 3-2 VICTORY OVER RHODE ISLAND
The Cardinals offense responded well in the final game of the double-header after just one hit against Oklahoma.
Kristin Hebert pitched very well for UIW allowing two earned runs on just three hits in five innings of work.
UIW jumped on the board first in the bottom of the third when
Mikaela Flores singled up the middle scoring
Danielle Ramirez. In the fourth, Rhode Island answered with a solo homerun from Melanie Martire to left center. However, in the fourth, Alex Alonso came off the bench with a single through the left side to score
Monica Flores giving the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
Later in the fourth, Lopez walked with the bases loaded to score
Monica Flores. Rhode Island added a run in the six, but
Sarah Leal held down the save after working 2.0 innings allowing just one hit.
Ramirez led the team with three hits and one run scored. Lopez, Flores, and Alonzo each had an RBI. As a team, UIW had eight hits and no errors. Martire led Rhode Island at the plate with the homerun.

The Cardinals return to action tomorrow with another double-header starting at 9 a.m. against Rhode Island. UIW finishes the second day of the Houston Classic at 11:30 a.m. against Ole Miss at Cougar Field.
