Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – UTRGV's Isidro Martinez's second goal of the came untied a 1-1 match in the 88
th minute, as the Vaqueros ended The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer's season with a 2-1 victory Saturday evening from Benson Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With UTRGV (7-6-3 overall, 4-4-2 WAC) needing only a tie to reach the WAC Tournament and UIW (5-11-1, 3-7-0) needing a win to advance, the visiting Vaqueros played conservative soccer, with many defenders on the back line.
The two teams battled to a scoreless first half. Cardinal netminder,
Brendan Brown, made a terrific diving save on a leaping shot deep in the box from UTRGV's leading goal scorer, Ilias Kosmidis, in the 29
th minute.
UTRGV drew first blood 11 minutes into the second half, as Martinez scored off a free kick. The Cardinals tied it in the 82
nd minute, as
Marjan Gamsjager received a pass from senior
Joe Brown and scored from just inside the box.
The two teams looked like they were destined for extra time, but Martinez got a pass inside the box from Petros Agiasiotis and shot between two defenders and beat Brown late in the match.
UIW outshot UTRGV, 11-8, in the match and had four of the match's five corner attempts.
LEADERS
Gams led the Cardinals with three shots, while J. Brown registered two. B. Brown took the loss in goal as he made one save.
Martinez scored two goals on three shots to lead UTRGV. Esa Alto earned the win between the pipes as he registered two saves.
