UIW Women’s Basketball Drops Home-Opener to Texas State

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team came out flat in their home-opener on Wednesday night and Texas State led from wire-to-wire, earning a 74-33 victory at the McDermott Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The Bobcats (2-0) quickly confirmed that their season-opening trouncing of Texas Tech was no fluke, scoring 7 consecutive points to start Wednesday's ballgame.
 
UIW (0-3) got on the board at the 7-minute mark when Quincy Baker connected on a jumper, but Texas State answered with a layup and a three-pointer to secure a 10-point advantage midway through the first.
 
With 2:49 remaining in the period, Gabbi Bowie knocked down a jumper, but the Bobcats closed the frame on a 10-2 run, and maintained a 22-9 lead after 10 minutes of action.
 
The Cardinals improved in the second, matching Texas State blow-for-blow at times, but the Bobcats carried a 43-23 advantage into the locker room.
 
Things didn't improve for UIW in the second half as the Cardinals were outscored by 6 points in the third quarter and 15 points in the fourth. UIW managed just 10 total points in the second half as Texas State ran away with a 74-33 victory.
 
THE BREAKDOWN
 
The Cardinals shot just 23.9 percent from the floor and 9.1 percent from beyond the arc, while surrendering 44.3 percent and 47.8 percent respectively.
 
Texas State earned a decisive 52-37 advantage in the battle of the boards, and converted their additional offensive opportunities into a 17-6 edge on second chance points.
 
The Bobcats picked up a 22-14 advantage on points in the point and an 8-2 edge on fast break points, while dominating the free throw battle, 16-2.
 
Texas State committed just one less turnover than UIW, 12-11, but still netted a significant 17-2 edge on points off turnovers.
 
LEADERS
 
Bowie paced the Cardinals with 9 points and 2 rebounds. Sydnee Wynn contributed a team-high 10 boards, to go along with 4 points, 1 block and 1 assist.
 
Toshua Leavitt (20 points) and Erika May (11 rebounds) led the Bobcats.
 
UP NEXT
 
UIW will host UMHB at 6 p.m. on Monday.
