BEAUMONT, Texas – Sydney Huntsinger made 14 saves – four shy of her own program record – but Southland Conference leader Lamar squeaked out a 1-0 victory over the Cardinals Friday evening from the LU Soccer Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite being outshot 23-4 in the match, UIW (2-10-0 overall, 1-6-0 SLC) hung with the winners of four straight, as the match was scoreless at halftime. In the waning minutes of the opening half, Lamar's (11-3-1, 6-1-0) Rubi Villegas' shot was blocked, but Hailey Loupe got a shot off seconds later, which Huntsinger saved.
Nine minutes into the second half, Lamar struck, as MJ Eckert headed a cross from Madison Ledet past Huntsinger. Eckert was not satisfied, however, as she had the next three shots on goal.
In the 61
st minute, UIW got out of a jam, started with a corner kick by Lamar's Lucy Ashworth. Eckert's header attempt was stopped by Hutsinger, but Lamar would get two more shot attempts, including a team save.
Ana Campa registered UIW's lone shot on goal, coming in the 90
th minute.
LEADERS
The 14 saves by Huntsinger were the most since she stopped that many at Abilene Christian on Oct. 29, 2015. She set the program record for most saves in a single game earlier that season, as she stopped 18 at Lamar on Oct. 18, 2015.
All four of Eckert's shot attempts hit the target to lead Lamar, while leading scorer Kelso Peskin had three shots on goal.
