Box Score BUFFALO, NEW YORK -- In a game that saw 40 fouls and five yellow cards, the University of the Incarnate Word dropped a road game against Canisius College 1-0 Friday night at Demske Sports Complex.
This was the Golden Griffins' (1-2) first win of the season, after losing their first two games by one goal each. The Cardinals were also 0-2 coming into the game tonight and have yet to find the back of the net. It was the same luck for UIW (0-3) Friday night as they were able to take eight shots, but only one on goal and came up empty.
The first half saw both teams attacking each other's goal, but both teams failed to score. But once the Golden Griffins came back from halftime, they didn't waste much time to open the score. Just over three minutes into the second half, Mitch Cancilla took a shot from five yards out and was able to beat UIW's
Jorge Guzman (Duncanville/Duncanville HS) for the only goal of the night. It was Cancilla's first goal of the season.
Guzman accumulated four saves that kept the Cardinals in the game the entire night, but the defense for the home team was too tough to beat.
Fernando Laverde (Frisco/Liberty HS) took the most shots for the Cardinals, four, while
Miguel Ojeda (Mesquite/Lone Stat HS) had the only shot on goal and two shots total.
The Cardinals will get another chance to get on the win column for the first time this season when they face the University of Buffalo at 10:00 a.m. Sunday.
