Box Score WACO, TEXAS - Baylor used three headers to shutout the University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team 3-0 on Sunday night at Betty Lou Mays Field.
Â
The Cardinals (0-3) knew they were facing a tough opponent in Baylor (3-1). Last time these two teams faced each other, the Bears took the game 7-1 at UIW in 2015.
Â
The Bears didn't take long to get on the board. Just in the 2nd minute, Raegan Padgett found Lauren Piercy in the box who headed in the first goal for the home team. The rest of the first half saw Baylor attack the Cardinals' goal often-11 shots-but without any luck. UIW goalie
Haley Nelson (Sioux City, IA/Bishol Heelan Catholic) came into the game in the 9th minute and made two big saves in the first half to keep the score 1-0 at the half.
Â
Once again the Bears would come out of the break very strong. Just two minutes into the start of the second half, Precious Akanyirige headed in the 2-0 in favor of the Bears. The Cardinals tried to cut the lead in half in the 56th minute when
Ana Campa (San Antonio/MacArthur HS) took a shot on goal, but Sara Martinson collected her only save of the night. Then a few minutes later, UIW's
Annika Fields (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) received a direct red card and left her club with ten players on the pitch. Baylor was able to attack more and took 13 shots in the second half alone, but Nelson had five of her seven saves in the second half. Then right before the end of the game in the 88th minute, Jackie Crowther found Ashley Thornhill in the box for the third header that resulted in a goal, giving the Bears the definitive 3-0.
Â
The Bears outshot the Cardinals 24-2 and their defense proved to be very strong.
Sam Batley was the only other Cardinal with a shot in the afternoon.
The Cardinals will have a week to prepare for their next game as they don't play until next Sunday, September 4, when they host UTRGV at 1:00 p.m. at Benson Stadium.
