CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team closes out its season this weekend in a three game series at Southland Conference rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The teams will play Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. at Chapman Field.
The Cardinals (13-37, 5-21) dropped a pair of one-run games last weekend to Abilene Christian University and will try to finish the season on a positive note against the Islanders (18-32, 7-20). UIW is hitting .239 as a team with a .314 on-base percentage.
Brance Kahle (Colleyville/Grapevine Faith HS) leads the team with a .274 batting average and 28 runs batted in. The team's best hitter away from home this season has been freshman
Eddy Gonzalez (Laredo/United HS) who has a .321 average in road games. Overall, he is hitting .263 with a team high four triples.
The UIW pitching staff has struggled this year and has a 7.31 earned run average.
Bernie Martinez (Laredo/United HS),
John Shull (San Antonio/Churchill HS) and
Cody Richey (Fair Oaks/Comfort HS) are expected to start the three games on the mound.
Lance Moszkowicz (Spring/Klein Collins HS) has been the top pitcher on the team out of the bullpen. He is 1-4 with a 4.38 ERA and eight saves in 49.1 innings.
The Islanders are hitting .259 with a .333 on-base percentage. The top hitters on the squad have been Casey Thomas, Zacarias Hardy and Zack Gibson. Thomas is batting .324 with six triples and 31 runs scored. Hardy has a .310 batting average with 10 doubles and 31 RBI's. Gibson has seven triples, six homers and 25 batted in.
Chris Falwell and Devin Skapura have been the team's top two starting pitchers and then David Worrell has made the third most starts. Falwell is 1-5 with a 3.24 ERA and 79 strikeouts while Skapura is 3-8 with a 3.64 ERA. Nolan Holland is the team's closer with seven saves and a 2.87 ERA and Austin Cornish has pitched well out of the bullpen with a 1.17 ERA in 15.1 innings.
