NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – The long ball once again hurt the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team as Stephen F. Austin used two homeruns, including a grand slam to take game two of the Southland Conference series 11-1 on Saturday at Jaycees Field.
Kyle Thornell hit his third three-run homerun in two days and Garrett McMullen hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to give the Lumberjacks (19-20, 8-12) a commanding 7-0 lead. Erik Nouis and Austin Hagy took care of the rest as they kept the Cardinals (10-29, 3-14) off the board until the eighth inning when they scored their only run. Nouis picked up the win after throwing five scoreless innings while walking two and striking out five. Hagy pitched the last four innings and allowed one run.
Cory Duran (Lewisville/Lewisville HS) drove in the Cardinals only run with a single to left field that scored
Weston Pitts (Highland Village/Flower Mound Marcus HS), who reached on a single and advanced to third on a
Brance Kahle (Colleyville/Grapevine Faith HS) double. UIW out hit SFA, 9-7 and were led by Pitts who collected three hits on the afternoon, but the homeruns by the Lumberjacks proved to be too much to overcome.
John Shull (San Antonio/Churchill HS) got tabbed with the loss after pitching five innings.
Cody Richey (Fair Oaks/Comfort HS) will look to salvage game three of the series as he is scheduled to make the start tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
