SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's and men's team both suffered losses in their final home matches of the season. The women's team faced Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, while the men faced off against Lamar University for Senior Day.
The Cardinals (3-11, 0-11) could not come up with a point today against the undefeated Islanders. Corpus Christi (20-0, 11-0) handed UIW a 7-0 loss as the Islanders took all points in straight sets.
Matea Zemunik (Jesenice, Croatia/Marko Marulic) and senior
Taryn Strahl (San Antonio/Churchill HS) battled against TAMCC for the longest matches of the day. Zemunik fell 6-4 and 6-2 while Strahl could not hold off Celia Rodriguez in the third position, 6-1 and 6-4. Seniors
Antea Dedic (Split, Croatia/Opca Gimnazija) and
Brianah Creek (Sonora/Sonora HS) joined up for the third position doubles, but it was left unfinished.
The men's team closed the season with a great start in the doubles. Senior
Josip Smoljan (Citluk, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Srednja Skola) and
Francisco Bendana (College Station/New Braunfels HS) won their No. 1 match, 6-4. The senior duo of
Tucker Brown (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) and
Ryan Hoverson (Grand Forks, ND/Red River HS) followed suit with the same score at No. 3 doubles for the point.
UIW (7-14, 0-5) lost their momentum in the singles matches as Lamar (14-5, 4-0) collected the rest of the points. Smoljan lost his final match as a Cardinal 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-3).
The women's team has one final competition against Baylor on the road. The Cardinals will be playing the Bears on April 13 at 10 a.m.
