SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – Texas State University completed the three-game sweep over visiting University of the Incarnate Word on Sunday afternoon in college baseball action, 5-4 at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Bobcats (8-4) jumped out to an early lead behind a first inning, two-run homer by Tanner Hill. They tacked on an unearned run in the second inning. Dylan Paul tripled and then scored on an error after two outs.
The Cardinals (3-9) got one back in the top of the fifth inning. After two outs, Blake Shepherd (Coldspring/Coldspring-Oakhurst HS) drew a walk and came around to after back-to-back singles by
Ryan Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) and
Weston Pitts (Highland Village/FM Marcus HS) who drove in the first run for UIW.
It looked like the Bobcats had put the game away in the sixth inning when they added two more runs. Luke Sherley and Granger Studdard opened the inning with base hits and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Hill and a single by Paul.
UIW would not go away lightly. In the top of the seventh inning,
Braden Martin (Andrews/Andrews HS) singled and scored on a pinch-hit double by
Tanner Wall (San Antonio/Johnson HS). Wall later scored on a base hit by Gonzalez. In the top of the ninth, Pasquale Mazzoccoli retired the first two Cardinals he faced, but then Pitts walked,
Austin Hoffman (Goodyear, AZ/Millennium HS) doubled and a wild pitch made it 5-4. Mazzoccoli was able to record the final out on a called strike three to pick up his second save of the season.
Jonathan Hennigan improved to 2-0 for the Bobcats. He tossed 5.0 innings allowing three hits, one run and five walks while striking out three. Texas State had nine hits overall with Sherley, Paul and Derek Scheible each getting a pair of hits and Hill finished with three RBI's.
Freshman
Tyler Lesley (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) pitched well for the Cardinals despite taking the loss. He went 5.0 innings allowing four hits, two earned runs and no walks while striking out one.
Lance Moszkowicz (Spring/Klein Collins HS) and
Cody Allen (Bulverde/Smithson Valley HS) combined to shutout the Bobcats over the final 2.2 innings. Gonzalez and Pitts each had two hits for UIW and Pitts reached base four times thanks to a pair of walks.
The Cardinals will play at UTSA on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before opening Southland Conference action this weekend at defending conference champion Southeastern Louisiana.
