HAMMOND, LOUISIANA – Southeastern Louisiana faced the minimum 27 batters on their way to an 11-0 win against the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team on Saturday to start the Southland Conference season.
The Lions' (8-6, 1-0) Kyle Cedotal, shutout the Cardinals (3-10, 0-1) for 8.0 innings and lost his perfect game with one out in the eighth. He only allowed one hit, no runs and no walks while striking out 13 to earn the win.
The Lions offense would take care of the rest as they scored early and often. They took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, then scored one more in the fifth, three in the seventh and four more in the eighth. They out-hit the Cardinals, 12-1 and had a few hitters with multiple hits. Jameson Fisher led the way with two hits and three RBI.
The lone hit for the Cardinals was a single in the eighth by
Cory Duran (Lewisville/Lewisville HS), but he would be thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double. After finishing the eighth, Cedotal was replaced by Corey Gaconi who would retire the Cardinals in order in the ninth.
The loss went to
Bernie Martinez (Laredo/United HS) who gave up four earned runs in 4.1 innings and struck out two.
Denson Hull (San Antonio/Churchill HS) and
Trevor Hardee (Alvord/Alvord HS) were the only two Cardinals out of five relievers to not allow a run. They combined to throw two innings allowing only one hit and striking out two.
The three-game series will continue tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon.
Tyler Lesley (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) and
John Shull (San Antonio/Churchill HS) are schedule to start the games for the Cardinals.
