ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team will step outside of Southland Conference play this weekend when they travel to UT Arlington for a three-game set starting on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Cardinals (5-16) will try to get their first win away from Sullivan Field this year. They are averaging 3.4 runs per game while hitting .215 with a .313 on-base percentage.
Braden Martin (Andrews/Andrews HS) and
Tanner Wall (San Antonio/Johnson HS) are each hitting over .300 for the club.
Brance Kahle (Colleyville/Grapevine Faith HS) and
Christian Divelbiss (Yuba City, CA/Yuba City HS) each lead the team with 12 runs batted in.
The UIW pitching staff has a combined 6.45 earned run average. The projected starting rotation is
Bernie Martinez (Laredo/United HS),
John Shull (San Antonio/Churchill HS) and
Tyler Lesley (San Antonio/Brandeis HS). Martinez is 0-3 with a 4.94 ERA in 27.1 innings of work. He is holding opponents to a .252 batting average. Shull is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 24.0 innings and leads the team with 26 strikeouts. Lesley is 2-2 with a 7.36 ERA in 14.2 innings. Lance Moskowicz (Spring/Klein Collins HS) has been the top reliever on the team making 11 appearances for a total of 21 innings. His 0.86 ERA is tops in the Southland Conference.
The Mavericks (11-11) are 8-5 at home this season. They are hitting .291 as a team and average 5.5 runs per game. They have five regulars in the starting lineup hitting over .300 led by Quintin Rohrbaugh and his .360 batting average. Noah Vaughan has been the top power hitter on the team. He sports a .605 slugging percentage in 43 at bats. The pitching staff has a 3.74 earned run average. Brad Vassar is scheduled to start the first game and he is 1-0 with a 1.57 ERA in 23 innings this year. Daniel James has a team high three saves, but will be starting the second game. Kadon Simmons has a 4-1 record and a 2.18 ERA and will start the finale.
