SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's and men's tennis teams were both defeated this week. The women's team was clipped by UTEP, 4-0 on Thursday at home and the men's team was nipped by Southland Conference rival New Orleans, 4-3 on Wednesday.
The Cardinals (2-12, 0-4) could not get on the board against UTEP. The #1 doubles team of
Rachel Sadiq (Frisco/Frisco HS) and
Matea Zemunik (Jesenice, Croatia/Marko Marulic), along with #2 doubles
Taryn Strahl (San Antonio/Churchill HS) and
Sarah Savedra (El Paso/El Paso HS) were retired 6-0 and 6-2, respectively. Only the #1, #2, and #6 matches were completed, all three closed in two sets.
Against UNO (5-4, 1-1), the Cardinals (7-8, 0-2) fought their back into the competition. Even though they dropped the doubles point,
Josip Smoljan (Citluk, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Srednja Skola) pulled himself together to take the #1 singles match 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Sebastian Mortier (Hanau, Germany/Karl-Rehbein-Schule) added a point for UIW by beating Luis Albuquerque 7-5, 6-4 in the #4 position.
Tucker Brown (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) was also successful with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Ryan Hoverson (Grand Forks, ND/ Red River) tried to bring the victory home for UIW, but fell in three sets in what proved to be the deciding match.
The men's team will be taking on the cross town rivals, the UTSA Roadrunners next Friday at 2 p.m. The women's team will face Louisiana rivals of Nicholls on Saturday at 10 a.m. and a second match against McNeese State on Sunday at 11 a.m.
