SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – A two-out, pinch hit RBI single by
Tanner Wall (San Antonio/Johnson HS) tied the game in the eighth inning and sent the game into extra innings with the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team later scoring four runs in the tenth inning to beat Bradley, 6-2 at Sullivan Field on Friday night.
The game was part of the Alamo Irish Classic, but due to schedule changes the game was played at UIW with the Cardinals (3-2) playing as the visiting team.
UIW jumped out ahead with an early run in the first inning on a
Brance Kahle (Colleyville/Grapevine Faith HS) RBI single that scored
Ryan Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS). It seemed like the Cardinals would not need any more runs because of the great pitching from freshman pitcher
Bernie Martinez (Laredo/United HS). He got a no-decision in six innings of work, allowing three hits, two runs and striking out six. He held the Braves (2-3) scoreless for over five innings, before allowing a go-ahead two-run homer by Paul Solka.
Martinez got off the hook when Wall tied the game in the eighth and the Cardinal bullpen once again was brilliant. They combined to pitch four scoreless innings, only allowing three hits, two walks and striking out seven.
Cody Allen (Bulverde/Smithson Valley HS) pitched two of those innings and collected five strikeouts, including a huge strike out with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. He loaded the count against Allan Beer, and finally struck him out after a nine-pitch at-bat.
Tyler Lesley (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) pitched one scoreless inning and struck out two to earn the win for UIW and
Lance Moszkowicz (Spring/Klein Collins HS) finished the game with a scoreless tenth. The loss went to the Braves' Mitch Janssen, after allowing four runs, three earned, in 1.1 innings of work.
Kahle,
Matt Morris (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro HS) and
Bryce Shepherd (Coldspring/Coldspring Oakhurts HS) each collected two hits for the Cardinals.
Christian Divelbiss (Yuba City, CA/Yuba City) once again hit a clutch hit as he gave UIW the lead in the tenth inning with a single to center field that drove in
Austin Hoffman (Goodyear, AZ/Millenium HS). The Cardinals later added three more runs, thanks in part to a two-run double by
Eddy Gonzalez (Laredo/United HS).
The Cardinals will get right back into action with two games on Saturday at Wolff Stadium. They play Notre Dame at 11:30 a.m. and Gonzaga at 7:30 p.m. The Cardinal probable starting pitchers are
Denson Hull (San Antonio/Churchill HS) and
Jake Bedevian (Houston/Second Baptist School).
