SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team lost a pair of games on Saturday at Nelson Wolff Stadium. The Cardinals lost to Notre Dame, 13-2 in the morning and then, 8-5 to Gonzaga late at night.
GAME 1
The Cardinals (3-4) were the visiting team against Notre Dame and
Ryan Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) led off the game with a double over the left fielder.
Weston Pitts (Highland Village/Flower Mound Marcus HS) moved him over to third with a groundout to second base and
Cory Duran (Lewisville/Lewisville HS) then drove Gonzalez in with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Fighting Irish (3-3) responded right away with four runs in the bottom of the first and added one in the third, four in the fourth, three more in the seventh and one last one in the eighth. Ricky Sanchez collected three hits for Notre Dame and also drove in a run. Connor Stutts delivered a big blow in the seventh inning with a three-run homer that gave them a comfortable 12-1 lead. UIW had a hard time retiring Cavan Biggio, who hit two singles, walked twice, scored three runs, drove in a run and stole two bases.
Notre Dame's starting pitcher, Sean Guenther held the Cardinals to four hits and one run. He pitched 7.1 innings, walked two and struck out five. Two of the Cardinal hits came from the second baseman, Gonzalez, who scored the first run for UIW. Duran finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, and
Brance Kahle (Colleyville/Grapevine Faith HS) reached base twice via the walk.
Robert Lopez (San Antonio/Brennan HS) drove in the second run with an RBI single in the top of the ninth.
Hunter Kunc (Mason/Mason HS) scored after reaching base on a walk.
The loss went to starter
Denson Hull (San Antonio/Churchill HS) who gave up five runs in two innings of work, while Guenther earned the win.
GAME 2
In the second game, Gonzaga jumped out in front on a two-out, two-run single by Tyler Frost in the top of the first inning. The Cardinals bounced back immediately with three runs in the bottom of the first. They loaded the bases with no outs and scored one run on a wild pitch. With two outs,
Christian Divelbiss (Yuba City, AZ/Yuba City HS) drove in two more runs with a triple.
Gonzaga reclaimed the lead in the top of the second inning. They scored on a pair of sacrifice flies and then added a third run in the inning on a bases loaded hit by pitch. Each team scored a run in the fifth inning with the Cardinals plating a runner on a Kahle single.
The Bulldogs quickly added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-4 lead. The Cardinals added another run in the eighth inning on Divelbiss' RBI single in the eighth inning and that was as close as they would get.
Hunter Wells picked up the win after allowing six hits, four runs and three walks in 5.0 innings while striking out eight. Sam Hellinger was credited with the save by pitching the final 4.0 innings of the game. He allowed an unearned run and struck out five.
Jake Bedevian (Houston/Second Baptist School) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs in 1.2 innings. Divelbiss and Kahle each had two hits in the game while Gonzalez scored a pair of runs.
The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday at Oklahoma State for a 4 p.m. game.
