BEAUMONT, TEXAS – The University of Incarnate Word softball team finished the Lamar Classic on a positive note after a 1-0 victory against Alcorn State on Sunday afternoon to give the team their first winning streak of the season.
The only run of the game occurred in the top of the third inning when Kristen Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score
Danielle Ramirez (San Antonio/Marshall HS). As a team, the Cardinals (3-8) only had four total hits, but they were still able to get the victory. Alcorn State had five total hits, but they were unable to string together multiple hits and get on the scoreboard.
Leading UIW at the plate was Ramirez who went 2-for-3 on the day, scored a run and stole a base.
Natali Duron (Pasadena/Memorial HS) reached base safely all three times she stepped up to the plate walking twice and getting hit by a pitch.
Jessica Rodriguez (Conroe/Oak Ridge HS) got the start today for UIW and she pitched a great game earning her first win as a Cardinal. Rodriguez (1-1) only allowed five hits in six innings and she did not allow a run.
Bridget Stein (Brenham/Brenham HS) came in to pitch the seventh inning and retired the side in order to earn the save.
The Cardinals will return to action on February 26 at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic with a doubleheader against IPFW and Jackson State. This was the first shutout win for the Cardinals since March 30, 2014 against Nicholls. It was their first 1-0 win since defeating Angelo State on April 7, 2013.
