SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – A pinch-hit, bases-clearing double from
Christian Divelbiss (Yuba City, CA/Yuba City HS) lifted the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team to a come-from-behind 7-4 win over non-conference rival LIU Brooklyn on Sunday at Sullivan Field.
Before the bases clearing double, Divelbiss hit a high foul ball to the catcher, which dropped, giving the Cardinals another shot. With the score in favor of LIU, 4-1 Divelbiss then took advantage of the error and drove the ball to left center field to tie the game up.
Robert Lopez (San Antonio/Brennan HS) then followed with an RBI single, which gave UIW their first lead of the game.
The Cardinals (2-1) started with freshman pitcher
Jake Bedevian (Houston/Second Baptist School) on the mound who did a nice job. He pitched 4.0 innings allowing only two hits and one earned run while striking out four. Three unearned runs scored due to five Cardinal errors in the game.
Austin Preiss (La Vernia/La Vernia HS),
Tyler Lesley (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) and
Lance Moszkowicz (Spring/Klein Collins HS) combined to pitch 5.0 scoreless innings, only allowing one Blackbird hit. Lesley earned the win for the Cardinals, his first as a Cardinal, and Moszkowicz earned his first save of the season.
For the Blackbirds, Tommy Jakubowski collected two more RBI's and walked twice. LIU was held to three hits by the Cardinal pitchers. They committed three errors, which led to four unearned runs on the day.
The Cardinals committed five errors, which allowed three unearned to score.
Ryan Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) collected two hits and another RBI, which gave him six for the series. Lopez finished the ballgame 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Cardinals will go on the road for a non-conference game against Prairie View A&M on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
