SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – After holding a 7-2 lead into the seventh inning, the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team gave up eight runs to drop a non-conference game against LIU Brooklyn, 10-7 Saturday at Sullivan Field.
It looked like the Cardinals (1-1) had their second win of the season in the bag, but the Blackbirds (1-1) rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to regain the lead, 8-7. A two-run home run by Tommy Jakubowski in the eighth inning gave them a 10-7 lead, which would be enough for their first win of the season.
UIW jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a
Mark Whitehead (San Antonio/Johnson HS) double, which was his third double of the series. LIU would quickly erase that lead with two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Cardinals would get it right back with three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
Freshman starting pitcher
Denson Hull (San Antonio/Churchill HS) pitched four solid innings in his debut, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out one. What helped the Cardinals get the win in Friday night's ballgame, the bullpen, cost them the game Saturday. The bullpen gave up eight runs, three of which were unearned, in 5.0 innings. A bright spot for the Cardinal bullpen came in the arm of
Lance Moszkowicz (Spring/Klein Collins HS), who threw 1.2 innings in relief and did not allow any hits, runs or walks and struck out two batters.
UIW's
Tyler Miller (Conroe/Oak Ridge HS) was tabbed with the loss, while William Jackson earned the win for the Blackbirds. Anthony Rupp pitched three scoreless innings in relief without allowing a hit and struck out three en route to his first save of the season.
Matt Morris (Scottsdale/Saguaro HS) collected two hits for the Cardinals, drove in a pair of runs and scored a run.
Bryce Shepherd (Coldspring/Coldspring/Oakhurst HS finished the ballgame 2-for-4 with three runs scored and
Ryan Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) added two more RBI's to make it five in the series.
For the Blackbirds, Jakubowski and Andrew Smith each had three RBI's on an afternoon that saw the visiting team outhit UIW, 10-7. The Cardinals also committed three errors which allowed three unearned runs to score. LIU committed one error which led to two unearned runs for the Cardinals.
The rubber game of the series at Sullivan Field has been moved to 10 a.m. on Sunday to allow LIU time to make their flight home. UIW's
Jake Bedevian (Houston/Second Baptist School), a freshman will get the ball for game three, and he will face LIU sophomore Baylor LaPointe.
