Lumberjacks Down Cardinals

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team never led in their loss at Southland Conference leader Stephen F. Austin on Monday night, 84-46 at the Johnson Coliseum.

The 'Jacks (19-5, 12-0) scored the first six points of the game and quickly led by double figures after back-to-back three-pointers by Trey Pinkney and Demetrious Floyd.  The Cardinals (13-10, 8-4) battled back and made it 13-9 after a layup by Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS).  It was still a 5-point game with under nine minutes left in the first half when SFA began to impose their will.

The 'Jacks went into halftime with a 37-24 lead and held the Cardinals scoreless over the final 3:20 of the half.  SFA quickly pushed the lead to 20 points at the start of the second half and never looked back.

The Cardinals shot 35.4 percent from the field, made 1-of-13 from three-point range and were 11-for-17 at the foul line.  Hittle led the team with 11 points while Derail Green (Houston/Klein Forest HS) added 10 points and six boards.  Shawn Johnson (New Orleans, LA/Alief Hastings HS) led the team with eight rebounds.  They committed 19 turnovers and were out-rebounded, 39-28.

Stephen F. Austin shot 54.2 percent from the field, including 70.4 percent in the second half.  They made 8-of-22 from three-point range and were 12-of-21 at the foul line.  Floyd led the team with 21 points and made five three-pointers while Thomas Walkup added 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.  They had 24 assists as a team and scored 34 points off turnovers.

The Cardinals will try to get back on track when they travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday for a 7 p.m. game.  UIW defeated the Islanders, 70-65 at home on February 2.
