Los Angeles, Calif. – Loyola Marymount tied the game with a pair of free throws with under two seconds left in regulation, then used a pair of and-one plays in overtime to defeat UIW men's basketball, 91-90, Saturday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a game that featured 10 ties and 17 lead changes, UIW scored the game's first five points, all by
Shawn Johnson. Leading by five six minutes into the game, LMU scored six unanswered for a one-point lead.
The teams went back and forth the remainder of the opening half, with no team leading by more than four. A pair of
Tyler Singleton free throws put the Cardinals ahead by four, 34-30, with two minutes to go, but the Lions closed the half on a 7-0 run – culminated by a three-pointer by Brandon Brown – to take a 37-34 lead into the locker room.
The teams continued to battle back and forth throughout the first 10 minutes of the second half, but a pair of
Simi Socks free throws followed by a trey by the sophomore gave UIW its largest lead of the half, 65-59, with 7:51 left in regulation.
Devin Wyatt made two free throws at the 2:28-mark to give UIW an eight-point advantage, as part of a 7-0 Cardinal run, but LMU continued to chip into the deficit, as two Buay Tuach free throws made the score 77-76 UIW with eight seconds left.
Jalin Hart made three of the next four free throws and, with UIW leading by two in the waning seconds, Trevor Manuel was fouled with two seconds left. He was cool under pressure, making both, as LMU forced overtime with UIW, tied at 80-all.
UIW got the early lead in the extra session as
Jorden Kite, fouled while attempting a three-pointer, made all three free throws. The Cardinals were still leading by two with 1:41 remaining when the tides changed. Tuoch slammed down a dunk while being fouled. He finished the three-point play to give the Lions a one-point lead. On the ensuing UIW possession, Hart missed a layup and Jeffery McClendon forced a steal, resulting in another unconventional three-point play for LMU, as the hosts led by four, 91-84, with 49 seconds to go. UIW came right back on a Johnson trey to cut the deficit by one and UIW had a chance for a game-winning shot, but McClendon blocked Singleton's shot and LMU held on.
LEADERS
Socks scored a career-high 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting, 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, and making all eight free throw attempts. Johnson and Kite each scored 17, as both Johnson and Socks pulled down a team-best five rebounds. UIW shot 45 percent from the floor in the game.
Brown led LMU with 24 points and was the top rebounder with eight. The Lions shot 49 percent in the game.
